Scammers initially send text messages or make calls with fake alerts about suspicious activity on the account or card. The victim is then contacted again by a number that appears to belong to the bank or law enforcement. <\/p>\n

In fact, this is a technique called spoofing, which allows the caller’s number to be masked.<\/p>\n

During the call, the scammers ask for personal information and\u2014by playing on a sense of urgency and fear\u2014try to convince the customer to make immediate bank transfers to accounts held by unknown individuals, under the pretext of \u201ckeeping the money safe.\u201d<\/p>\n
